Why Gender Sensitivity Needs to Be Taught Early?
As our world strives for inclusivity and equality, gender sensitivity and understanding is essential, not just a value to be developed. Developing gender sensitivity starts early in childhood so that girls and boys become aware of, respect, and support gender equity and dismantle outdated stereotypes that have historically constrained both genders.
Gender sensitivity is understanding gender differences, gender issues, and gender inequalities, while taking care to exhibit equity in our attitudes and behavior. Regrettably, many children are unaware of the narrow gender roles that are formed from birth. Boys are often conditioned not to cry, girls are often told to be "ladylike" and professions misspecified as simply "male" or "female". This stereotypes become a part of who we are and difficult to unlearn in adulthood.
Children can be taught gender sensitivity at a young age, and they can develop a better understanding of equality as a result. Schools are instrumental in this process. Additionally, schools can eliminate myths, promote children's respecting others as individuals regardless of their sex and gender, and provide inclusive textbooks, inclusive discussions in the classroom, and non-biased role models.
Parents can have a significant impact as well. By giving children the freedom to be themselves, eliminating gendered toys or activities, and demonstrating that respectful relationships are important at home, families will be able develop emotionally balanced and socially conscious individuals.
The advantages of gender sensitivity in early childhood development can be help beyond individual development. It creates safer environments and communities, lowers violence levels, encourages respectful relationships, and nurtures better mental health for all genders. Boys learn that empathy is a skill and definitely not a sign of weakness. Girls learn that ambition, drive, and determination is not arrogance or a bad quality. And boys and girls will learn that they are valued, not on the basis of their gender, but for who they are, as a person.
In a country like India, where society is still changing, teaching gender sensitivity early is a meaningful step towards improving society. If we want children to grow up with equality for all in their hearts, to respect differences, and to eliminate generations of discrimination, then we have to do the work now at the home, school, and day-to-day levels. It is not just education, it is also early intervention in shaping hearts and minds.
