"The perks of being a wallflower"

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower," is a heartbreaking coming-of-age thriller about adolescence, mental health, and a sense of belonging, written by Stephen Chbosky. With Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller, the film follows Charlie as a shy, introverted, and timid high school freshman who is still discovering himself and trying to keep trauma from his past buried. Charlie meets a motley crew of anti-cultural elders willing to offer him tolerance and acceptance. Charlie contends with problems created through the recovery of his trauma and slowly discovers freedom in experience and closure in unresolved situations with his new friends.

Charlie's character develops sensitively from the chain in this well-written movie. The story has a steady pace and the shifts between happy and sad moments are smooth: consistent, fast pace. The mood is upbeat without feeling cliched or overly dramatic. The acting is stellar. Logan Lerman portrays Charlie's character development and vulnerability very nuanced. Emma Watson portrayed Sam with the perfect mix of vulnerability and strength. Ezra Miller gave an animated unforgettable portrayal of Patrick. The chemistry among the cast was somehow electric and made for an emotionally compelling movie.

Stephen Chbosky's directing is great and complements the tone of the book. He is an actor's director and has the characters' feelings, and their experiences first and foremost and very authentic on all fronts. The editing is very straight forward and simple, so that the story and performances can shine; the cinematography makes great use of light and dark to convey Charlie's emotional state. The songs added to the audience's emotional stimuli, and fit very well into the film's themes. Music, and song, is an integral part of the overall experience. The characters and the period are really tied to the songs.

The movie discusses the four themes of friendships that are self-discovery, trauma, and mental illness. The film is a hopeful tale of finding ourselves and our position in this world and the importance of human connection. The film is beautifully and exquisitely crafted and its impact echoes long after the credits have run out. It is one of those films that absolutely everyone who have ever felt lonely should see simply because of its amazing performances, deliberately considered direction, and mesmerizing story.
