GOOD WILL HUNTING
Good Will Hunting
Directed by Gus Van Sant | Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
Good Will Hunting (1997) is an emotional and intellectually and psychologically powerful film about genius, trauma, friendship, and self-discovery. Starring Matt Damon as Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT who has extraordinary mathematical abilities, Good Will Hunting follows Will on his journey of coming to grips with his trauma and reconciling with his possible future.
Will is a self-taught genius who is comfortable with being a non-entity, a rebel. He chooses to spend his free time with a loving group of friends, in South Boston. Once Will solves a difficult math problem posted on a professor's blackboard, his talent is now in the public. In comes Will's love for violence and running from authority, and Will's open doors for life-changing opportunities close. Robin Williams comes in as sympathetic therapist Sean Maguire, who also carries his own emotional injuries. Immediately and inextricably connected, Sean and Will form a relationship.
The heart of the film is the attention on Will and Sean, and it changes significantly. Williams offers, his best performance, clearly bringing warmth, depth, and wisdom to the character. The scenes with Damon have a spark (especially the classic "It's not your fault" scene) that served as context for Will's difficult past. Damon is also terrific, delivering a nuanced performance: a complicated character who's caught between where he is currently, based on fear, and where he could be, based on his ability.
The screenplay by Damon and Ben Affleck, who plays Will's best friend Chuckie, is smart and heartfelt. It balances humor, raw emotion, and philosophy to make the characters feel real. The work really forces us to ponder some important questions: what does it mean to lead a life with meaning? Genius is great, but is it really enough without love, trust, and healing?
Director Gus Van Sant has a somewhat passive style of directing stories, putting the focus on the actors and their dialogue, both of which take priority in the film. Music is created by Danny Elfman and songs by Elliott Smith develop additional emotional complexities to the story.
All in all, Good Will Hunting is not just a story about a math genius; it also has a focused exploration of relationships, vulnerability, and change. It is still a notable film, with great performances and an enduring message.
